THE "TILES''. A GLACI0-LACUSTRINE FACIES FROM THE ITARARÉ GROUP
Abstract
A "tiles" facies composed of sandstone varved pairs displaying climbing ripple marks (deposited by summer underflows) and of hemipelagic shale drapes (winter) occurs in the upper portion of the Rio do Sul Formation (Itararé Group). This facies overlies classical varvites gradationally, representing a progradation of proximal lake deposits {base-of-slope = tiles} overlying proglacial lake-center laminated varvites. This interpretation finds support in an analogy to Ouaternary models.
