Quantitative stratigraphic distribution of planktonic foraminifera in the quaternary of the Southeastern Brazilian continental margin

A biostratigraphic template is presented in this paper, based on the quantitative vertical sucession of planktonic foraminifera species associations that characterize zonal and sub-zonal intervals during the last 1.8 million years, for the SE Brazil continental margin basins. It is the result of a compilation of hundreds of counts of percentage variations of the Globorotalia menardii group, of the genuses Pulleniatina and Orbulina and of the species Globorotalia inflata and Globorotalia truncatulinoides, in samples from jumbo piston cores from the Santos, Campos, Espirito Santo basins and also from Jequitinhonha. The average percentages of each group, genera or species for each zonal or subzonal interval and its local and global markers were plotted against a timescale, as, it was mentioned above, restricted to the late Quaternary of the Campos Basin. This new template, however, spans the entire Quaternary period and it is valid for the SE Brazilian marginal basins.
