Integrated biostratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous in Santos Basin: ostracodes, charophytes and palynomorphs
Keywords:

An integrated biostratigraphic study of the middle Santonian-upper Maastrichtian interval in the Santos Basin was carried out based on ostracode, charophyte and palinomorph occurrences. Hundred nineteen species of ostracodes and 24 of charophytes were registered in the 14 wells studied. Based on the distribution in time and space of those microfossils, four zones of marine ostracodes, three zones of ostracodes and two zones of charophytes were proposed to paralic paleoenvironment. The Santos Basin has paralic sedimentary intervals where the marine microfossils do not offer good biostratigraphic resolution. The present study, therefore, brings a contribution to more complete zonation for that section. The potential of the cretaceous shelf marine ostracodes for correlation of sedimentary basins and the viability of paralic ostracodes and charophytes incoastal environments is highlighted.
